Born to the fallen House Martritz, Mercedes was later adopted by House Bartels before she fled with her mother to avoid succession wars due to her crest, living in the church for the next 10 years before she is forcefully adopted by a merchant for her crest of Lumine. Having been raised by the church, Mercedes is devoted to the goddess and can often be found praying. Due to her chaotic upbringing, Mercedes had originally allowed things to simply happen to her, having believed that she had no power to change anything as it was the will of the goddess. However, over time, she learned to stand on her two feet, defending herself and others in the face of injustice, and choosing to join the war-- the first time she ever made a decision for herself.
Pious, calm, and patient, Mercedes comes off as a kind and gentle friend, a good listener, and someone others can lean on in times of trouble. Some even say that she is like an older sister to them. She is endlessly patient with others, and empathetic to their struggles, especially for those who suffered due to their crests. Although polite, Mercedes is not afraid to speak her mind, whether it is to point out someone's hypocrisy or challenge someone else's assumptions, even if it puts her in a disadvantageous position. She can be reckless in her desire to help others, but dislikes when others are the same. Although she can be absentminded and clumsy, she is very observant of those around her, knowing just how they tick better than they do.
She specializes in healing magic, but has a great aptitude for all kinds of magic. She also shows some innate talent for the bow. When not in battle, Mercedes enjoys doing housework, whether it is gardening, cleaning, baking, or sewing.
